SEOMOZ.org

06.21.2016 by Josh Anderson //

roger_and_logoIn my 19-plus years of online marketing, MOZ.com is hands down the best overall resource for SEO and online marketing knowledge that I have found. Not only is the community amazing, their tools more than pay for themselves.

In addition to offering a plethora of information and tools the company’s founder and former CEO  Rand Fishkin is a great guy–I have met him twice. I’ve also seen him speak multiple times and I always find him entertaining and informative. Fishkin dropped out of the University of Washington in 2001 in order to start MOZ and has since become a leading voice in online marketing and search optimization. He stepped down from the CEO position in 2013 but is still in the software business with the company Sparktoro.

Where to Begin: Beginner’s Guides & MOZ Blog

If you are new to SEO, I suggest that you start with MOZ’s Learn SEO and Search Marketing page. It is a great place to start your long journey and breaks down online marketing into easy-to-digest pieces, such as link building, social media, local marketing, and content marketing. After you learn the basics, begin reading the blog for tips, news, and updates

Utilizing MOZ Pro

I am a MOZ Pro product user, and I love it. If you are looking for some powerful SEO tools, check them out. I could not do my link building projects without them. The dashboards are beautiful and the tools are extremely useful. The cost is around $1000 a year, but worth every penny.

The MOZ Pro toolset includes:

  • Search engine keyword rankings, for both your websites and the competition.
  • Keyword research, to understand the best words and phrases to target.
  • Link building tools and link analysis tools.
  • SEO site audits.
  • Page optimization reports and checklists.

Learning Through the Whiteboard Friday Video Series

If you do nothing else, watch the “Whiteboard Friday” videos series. Each video is usually no longer than 10 or 15 mins and they never fail to inform. Many of these videos are headed by found Rand Fishkin, and each one takes an in-depth look at an online marketing subject, question, or theory.

Follow MOZ on Social Media

Regularly reading MOZ is an excellent way to keep up-to-date on all things related to online marketing and search optimization. Follow them on social media to get all of the latest:

  • Twitter
  • Google+
  • LinkedIn
  • Facebook
  • YouTube
  • SlideShare

MOZ isn’t the only place online to get your SEO information and news, but for over a decade it has been the single best source for my knowledge and know-how. Check it out to get the best information, laid out clearly and beautifully.

Long Way Round: Give Your Evergreen Content A Long Life

06.20.2016 by Josh Anderson //

Understanding why evergreen content is important–and knowing how to keep your content fresh, timely, and interesting over time–are key skills for both online marketers and content creators. In this post, I’ll talk about one of my favorite pieces of content/brands, analyze what makes their brand successful, and take a look at a few tactics I might use to improve the project even further.

Making Long Way Round Last Longer

Long Way RoundLong Way Round and the sequel, Long Way Down, are two British television documentary mini-series that track the international motorcycle adventures of actor Ewan McGregor and travel writer Charlie Boorman. Both series are amazing pieces of content that everyone should see–and they are easily in my top 5 favorites for video content. I love these series for many reasons, including the adventure, the brotherhood, and the honesty.

Along with being incredibly entertaining to watch, the creators of Long Way Round have also done some excellent brand management. Top Left Design created their website, and I believe currently still handles all social media efforts. The website is now over ten years old, but the content still lives a strong life thanks to Top Left Design (Great job, guys!).

Now let’s take a closer look at their online marketing efforts as well as a few tactics that I might use to keep the site and brand as strong as they deserve to be.

Further Possible Online Marketing Improvements

Adding Updated Content

The site was created in 2010 with a simple and easy-to-navigate design that has held up well over the years. I would update the content; it has not been touched in a few years. I would rectify this by adding new blog posts six times every year. I like how the site promotes its Facebook page and online store by using banners in the main header area.

Improving the Online Store

The online store was created using Shopify. While the store is easy to use, it is localized to countries who use the Pound. I would update this to show multiple currencies.

Upping Social Media Posts

Whoever (Thinking Top Left Design) is managing the Facebook page for this brand is doing an exceptional job. I might post one or two more times a month (it is currently updated once or twice a month). I think the content and cadence is perfect, which has led to incredible engagement with thousands of likes coming in for each post, along with a minimum of 50-100 comments and shares. The page has almost 100,000 likes total and a very loyal following. Facebook is the big success story here, but they have also done a good job on Flicker, Twitter, YouTube and Vimeo.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Partnership Promotion.

The one area I see a lot of room for improvement is On-Page SEO and Off-Page SEO.

On-Page SEO:

logoFirst and foremost, the Title Tags need to be reworked. Moving the name of the show to the end of the title tag, with the exception of the Homepage, and adding more relevant keywords to the title copy will greatly improve the SEO. If you look at the source code of the site, you will see the meta description tag is missing from every page of the site. The meta keyword tags are also missing from all the blog pages. Adding these descriptions and tags are easy fixes that can have a significant effect on the amount of organic traffic the site receives.

Off-Page SEO: To get links, you need link bait on your site. There is not much of that on this site besides the product itself, and products typically don’t generate a ton of links. Again, I would start creating content and forming link partnerships immediately. I would try producing content around adventure travel and reaching out to other travel sites about publishing and sharing this content.

Content Creation With Partners

Big EarthI would also create more content around some of the companies that took part in the creation of this inspiring brand, such as www.bigearth.com, www.elixirfilms.com or www.explore.co.uk.  They all have their own interesting stories that will attract attention and links. You can learn more about link building at Moz.org.

I hope you are inspired to check out this wonderful project, and I hope that you found this post useful if you are a professional marketer. Long Way Round is an excellent piece of evergreen content that I can only assume is still making money and making people happy even though it is now over a decade old.

I’ve read that the whole Long Way Around brand was inspired by Jupiter’s Travels, a book by motorcyclist Ted Simon.  If you are looking for a new book, It will make you want to hit the road tomorrow.

Using Reddit To Generate Traffic

03.08.2016 by Josh Anderson //

When most businesses think about advertising online, Reddit may not be the first site that comes to mind. But the self-proclaimed “Front page of the internet” gets millions upon millions of unique viewers per month–and from of the biggest opinion-makers on the web. It is a great place to influence the influencers, and as such it is not a place for formal pitches; it is a place to be clever and go big.

Reddit has two types of advertising programs: custom advertising and self-service advertising. In this post, I will be addressing the latter.

Self Service Advertising On Reddit.com

The self-service ads appear at the top of all the pages under the “sponsored headline” section as seen below.

Reddit Ads

Your ad will get a 70×70 image and around 100-150 characters of text to induce a click. The question you have to answer is where you would like the user sent to next. You have two options: one, send them directly to your landing page off of Reddit, or two, send them to another page on Reddit with an embedded text box and any message of your choice with unlimited text and links. This second type of promotion is perfect for adding more details and using a softer pitch. If you are selling the kind of product that sells itself, just send them to your site. If your product requires a bit of a connection or bond, I suggest the “Embedded Text Box.”

Money To Spend On Reddit AdsHow Much Does It Cost?

You can start your ad campaign with as little as $5, but I would not come to the table without at least $300 to test. That should get you around 300,000 impressions as long as you don’t need to GEO target within the United States. If you do need to target a certain area, $300 will net you only around 60,000 impressions, though that is enough to give you a good first impression.

How You Can Target

Unless you are a big brand or have the budget to pitch the general masses, I would stick to “Subreddit & Interest Group Targeting” combined with a GEO location.  There are around 7000 subreddits and nine interest groups to choose from.

Pick wisely and get to know the subreddits and their audiences well before going all in. These groups have leaders, rules, and personalities, and you will benefit from hanging out and reading the threads for awhile before writing your ad copy and picking your thumbnail image.

The Reddit Audience

You might think they Reddit users a bunch of young men with no money, but you would be wrong.  The median age of the visitors is 35 years old, and the median household income is $67,973.30 according to www.nielsen.com. The Reddit media kit states the site currently gets 5.6 billion page views and 114 million unique visitors each month, who spend an average of 14 mins on the site. Those are some impressive numbers, and to top that off, Alexa says the site is number 50 in its Global rankings.

You now know a reasonable amount about advertising on Reddit.com, so consider checking out the site and giving it a try.
